“We demand that our elected leaders stand up for what truly matters — protecting critical public services for students and rejecting massive giveaways to billionaires like Elon Musk. Our students deserve the investment, and the American people deserve leaders who prioritize their well-being over the wealth of a few.”
— Becky Pringle, President of the National Education Association
“As Republican governors at the White House celebrate the dismantling of a federal role in education, our members across the country are worried about the impact this will have on their students. No one likes bureaucracy, and everyone’s in favor of more efficiency, so let’s find ways to accomplish that. But this isn’t efficiency, it’s evisceration.”
— Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers

At the heart of every thriving society is a strong public education system. It’s one of the few institutions built on the idea that all children—regardless of race, income, ability, or background—deserve access to the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to succeed.
More than a pathway to individual advancement, public education is the bedrock of a healthy democracy. It’s where young people learn not only academic content, but how to participate in civic life, engage with diverse perspectives, and contribute to the common good. Without a strong, inclusive public education system, efforts to build a more just, equitable, and united society simply cannot succeed.
Here’s why public education matters—now more than ever:
It ensures opportunity for all.
Public schools are the only system with a mandate to serve every single child. They are our most powerful tool for expanding opportunity and breaking cycles of poverty. It builds an informed democracy.
Public education equips students with the critical thinking skills, historical context, and civic literacy necessary to participate in and protect democratic institutions. It fosters equity and inclusion.
Unlike private or selective systems, public schools strive to serve diverse learners—students with disabilities, English language learners, and children from marginalized communities—and to close longstanding opportunity gaps.It supports communities.
Public schools are anchor institutions. They create jobs, offer services, and bring together families and neighborhoods around shared goals. It strengthens the social fabric.
By educating students from all walks of life together, public schools cultivate understanding, cooperation, and a shared sense of responsibility to one another. When public education is underfunded, undermined, or politicized, the consequences ripple far beyond the classroom. Disinvestment and privatization do more than harm students—they weaken communities, deepen inequality, and erode the foundation of democratic society.
That’s why the Public Education Alliance is working to defend, strengthen, and reimagine public education for the 21st century. Because the future of our students—and our country—depends on it.

Our Public Education System Is Under Threat — And the Challenges Are Deeply Interconnected
Public education has long been a cornerstone of American democracy and economic opportunity. But today, our nation’s public schools face a series of escalating and interconnected challenges that undermine their ability to deliver high-quality education to every student. These challenges demand urgent, coordinated action.
Chronic Underfunding and Resource Disparities
For decades, our public schools—especially those in low-income communities—have suffered from chronic underinvestment. Stark disparities in state and local funding have created wide gaps in per-pupil spending between affluent and under-resourced districts. This inequity shows up in overcrowded classrooms, outdated textbooks, aging infrastructure, and limited access to technology. Students with the greatest needs—such as those in special education, English language learners, and children living in poverty—are often the ones most affected by these resource shortages, deepening cycles of disadvantage.Privatization and the Erosion of Public Accountability
A growing wave of privatization threatens to hollow out public education. Voucher programs and tax-credit scholarships siphon public funds into private institutions that are not held to the same standards of equity, transparency, or accountability. These efforts undermine the promise of a free, high-quality education for all and redirect public dollars to serve private interests—further weakening the public system for those who rely on it most.Censorship and Ideological Attacks on Curriculum
Across the country, politically motivated efforts are restricting what students can learn and what teachers can teach. Legislatures and school boards are banning books, limiting discussions of race and gender, and targeting content on topics like climate change, reproductive rights, and LGBTQ+ inclusion. These censorship efforts strip students of the opportunity to engage with complex ideas, learn from history, and develop critical thinking skills—while chilling the professional judgment and freedom of educators in the classroom.A Deepening Teacher Workforce Crisis
Our education system cannot function without a strong, supported teaching workforce. Yet educators today face unsustainable working conditions: low pay, increasing responsibilities, and shrinking autonomy. As a result, schools across the country are struggling to recruit and retain qualified teachers, especially in high-need areas such as special education, STEM, and rural districts. This crisis is compounded by limited access to meaningful professional development and a lack of respect for teachers’ expertise, leading to burnout and high turnover.School Boards in the Crosshairs of Political Extremism
What were once nonpartisan, community-driven school board meetings have become battlegrounds for national political agendas. Extremist actors have flooded local meetings to spread misinformation and sow distrust in educators and administrators. This climate of hostility disrupts the ability of school leaders to focus on student needs, undermines evidence-based decision-making, and erodes public confidence in one of our most essential democratic institutions.Public schools are engines of civic engagement, economic mobility, and social cohesion. Weakening them doesn’t just harm students; it threatens the fabric of our democracy and our nation’s future. Without bold intervention, these converging threats will deepen inequality, limit opportunity, and fracture our communities further.
The Public Education Alliance is committed to confronting these challenges head-on. We believe that every child deserves a fully funded, inclusive, and high-quality public education—and we’re working to unite communities, educators, parents, and policymakers in that fight.
